This weeks “Bicycle of the Week” is LOOK KG196. Introduced in 1991, the KG196 was a groundbreaking invention. For one thing, this bike combined carbon kevlar, ceramic, and aluminum, subsequently making other pro peloton bikes seem outdated. Look is a French company, established back in 1951.

THE FOUNDER OF THE LOOK COMPANY WAS AN INNOVATOR

As a matter of fact, its founder, Jean Beyl, experienced a ski accident which led to the creation of the first safety release ski bindings. Consequently, this innovation paved the way for a new pedal technology that revolutionized cycling.

Moreover, the KG196 was distinct from earlier carbon frames. Unlike the traditional method of assembling carbon tubes with aluminum lugs, the KG196 was bonded under heat and pressure in a mold. As a result, it boasted numerous innovative design features.

The carbon monocoque frame of the KG196 was not only striking but also a testament to the company’s pioneering spirit. However, crafting a frame from a single mold was challenging and costly. Nevertheless, it enabled unprecedented changes in shape and riding dynamics.

Further, this novel manufacturing process facilitated the creation of diverse shapes, crucial for the aerodynamic advancements that Look would later achieve.

THE KG196 DISTINCT SHAPE

For optimal aerodynamics, the KG196 had a distinctive shape, including a large down tube and a specially designed seat stay area. Notably, it featured the first integrated fork, enhancing its aerodynamic profile.

Look’s aerodynamic focus extended to an integrated straight bladed fork, which, along with internal cable routing, marked a significant evolution in bike design. Equipped with high-quality components, the KG196 represented the pinnacle of innovation.

This KG196 is equipped with Campagnolo Record parts including Delta brakes, Shamal wheels, Flite Titanium saddle and Look 196 Team edition pedals. The integrated Look Ergostem, which is adjustable beyond belief is part of the equipment too.

Unfortunately, the UCI expressed concerns over the radical designs initiated with the KG196, leading to a halt in its competitive use. Thus, despite its advancements, the KG196’s journey in competitive cycling was abruptly ended.
