Their frames are renowned among long-distance cyclists for titanium construction that balances durability with ride quality. This particular Pioneer model, originally designed for 26-inch wheels, has been reimagined by Martin Zeplichal, a Viennese designer and developer who previously built the Cinelli Porteur featured in this series. The vertical adjustment mechanism operates through slotted mounting holes and serrated washers that lock the brake position once set. This design maintains the brake’s structural integrity while providing the flexibility needed for wheel size conversions. The brakes deliver 85mm of reach when fully extended, accommodating the larger wheel diameter while maintaining proper pad-to-rim contact.

The 650b wheel size offers distinct advantages for mixed-surface touring. The larger diameter compared to 26-inch wheels improves rollover capability on rough roads, while the smaller diameter compared to 700c wheels provides additional tire clearance for wider rubber and fenders. Japanese touring routes often transition between paved roads and gravel paths, making the 650b format particularly suitable. Additionally, 650b tires and tubes remain widely stocked in Japanese bike shops, simplifying replacement logistics during extended tours.

Aluminum fenders complement the wheel setup, providing weather protection essential for year-round touring. The fenders mount directly to the frame’s braze-ons, maintaining proper coverage over the wider 650b tires while allowing sufficient clearance for debris evacuation.

The original incandescent bulb consumed 6 watts and produced 15 lumens; the LED conversion draws 0.6 watts while generating 50 lumens. Power comes from a SON Edelux dynamo hub, eliminating battery dependency during extended tours.

The front lighting employs a custom mount positioned atop the aluminum fenders. This mounting location places the beam above wheel spray while maintaining a low center of gravity. The SON Edelux II headlight produces 100 lux at the center of its beam pattern, exceeding German StVZO regulations for bicycle lighting. The dynamo hub generates 3 watts at 6 volts when traveling above 15 km/h, sufficient to power both front and rear lights continuously.
